They look so clean, so antiseptic, those doctors in their white coats. Their white lab coats are iconic, having been worn since the turn of the 20th century. Before that, physicians wore street clothes even while performing surgery.

But now, the American Medical Association is considering a resolution that would recommend hospitals ban doctor’s white coats. Holy Cow!

An interesting article on what are supposed to be guardians of cleanliness are also carriers of infection–and this also includes me by the way!

The basis of this blog is from an article I read from PLoS (the Public Library of Science) entitled “Antibiotics Are Not Automatic Anymore – The French Campaign to Cut Antibiotic Overuse“. The French government as well as other European countries are more or less campaigning to reduce the prescription of antibiotic use by doctors in cases of viral respiratory diseases.

Last November 2008, a University of Colorado study entitled “The influence of sex, handedness, and washing on the diversity of hand surface bacteria” was presented to the National Academy of Sciences. The lead author of the study is Asst Prof Noah Fierer of the university’s Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department.
