The National Heart, Lungs and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has recently launched its Disease and Conditions Index (DCI) site which mainly caters to people with less or no background in the medical field. Obviously, it focuses more on the diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and blood diseases. Interestingly, Sleep Disorders is also included in its database.
Most of its statistical data is based from the United States, nevertheless we can still much learn from the many and varied topics it presents. From the usual: causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to things that can enhance appreciation and learning of the patient/individual on the disease in question like links to related topics and diseases, images, animations, as well as podcasts.
Currently, DCI is still filling up its database (though it already contains more than 50 conditions) , so don’t expect much yet but it’s good to start browsing its site and start learning.
DCI is also presented in Spanish.
