It’s very common for us at some time in our lives when we ought to try newer things, newer ways to brighten up our lives; and that’s what Duke University scientists in the United States have found. Deep in the brains of monkeys (and possibly in humans) is an area where the desire for change resides. They found that the neurons in the posterior cingulate of the brain fire vigorously when the monkeys make up their mind to go to the unknown, to explore other areas rather than stick to the routine.

The scientists said that knowing how this specific area functions can lead us to learn how we adapt in new situations or places.

So maybe the next time you decide to go via a novel route, think of your posterior cingulate. Now if they can look for that part of the brain that’s active when we just stick to what we usually do.
